State-owned Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) has contracted Freight Car America USA to supply 500 wagons with high-tech specifications accepted by American Automobile Association (AAA).
The $67m contract, signed by SRO president Mohamed Al-Suwaiket, comes in response to increasing demand for transportation of cement, cereals, limestone and rocks.
SRO will use the wagons for transportation of the materials of companies like ARASCO, Cement, Al Belha and Geerco. The wagons, which will have life-span of 30 years and capacity of 100t each, will be delivered within one year.
In an interview with arabnews.com, SRO PR chief Mohamed Abuzaid said: "The contract to supply the wagons is for enhancement of the partnership with the private sector in the country."
"The new railway wagonwagons will meet international high-tech specifications equipped with highly efficient ABDX and UBX brake system."
Under the contract, Saudi engineers and technicians inside and outside the Kingdom will be offered training sessions in maintenance and operation areas.
In September, SRO contracted DB International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of German railway company Deutsche Bahn, to supervise the construction of a 450km, double-track, high-speed rail link for the Al Haramain project.
The Al Haramain project includes the creation of five new stations in Makkah, Jeddah, Jeddah International Airport, King Abdullah Economic City and Medina.
