On 16 December 2015, first railway wagon train delivery ceremony was held by Vertex rail Corp., a company shared by CRRC Yangtze Co., Ltd. in Wilmington, North Carolina.
With pomp, circumstance, dignitaries on stage and 200 employees wearing hard hats looking on, officials with Vertex rail Corp., sent first 30 new grain hopper cars down the rails. The cars were the first completed by the company.
“Man, this is a great day in the city of Wilmington,” Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said during Wednesday’s ceremony. “I must say, Christmas has come early to Wilmington.”
The completed cars were railway part of 300-car initial order Vertex received along with a second order of 800 cars. And, before cutting a ceremonial ribbon, Don Croteau, Vertex’s CEO, announced that the company had received an order Wednesday for 2,800 more cars, for a total of 3,900 cars ordered since the first test car was built in September.
Weiping Yu, vice president of CRRC which is partnering with Vertex and is the largest wagon builder in the world, attend the ceremony and said Wilmington is a “place where miracles come from” while referencing one of the city’s favorite sons.
“Michael Jordan started his career here and created a fabulous achievement recognized by the world,” Yu said. “Today, VRC sets off here and, inevitably, it will make a great contribution to the rail industry. And next time, if Michael Jordan has a basketball game, he can ship his basketballs in one of our
hopper wagons here manufactured by us.”
